Welcome to the website of the Saint James
Chapel. Modeled after Sainte
Chapelle , Paris, this treasure has been called "the crown jewel
of Chicago's architecture." The chapel was dedicated with a concert
of choral and organ works on November 22, 1918, the Feast of Saint
Cecelia - patroness of music.
For over 90 years, the
chapel has served as a place of education and worship for the students of
Archbishop Quigley Preparatory Seminary.
Through the years it has become a place of meditation and
artistic inspiration for persons of all faiths. Most recently, it has
also become a setting for public concerts and recitals. The
preparatory seminary was terminated several years ago, when the three
classroom wings were converted into office spaces, and renamed The Quigley Center,
the new home of the administrative offices of the Archdiocese of
Chicago. At that time the remaining restoration of the stained
glass windows was accomplished along with many infrastructural
improvements.
Weight, years of pollution, temperature extremes, and the
passage of time had threatened to bring collapse to this Chapel's
glorious windows. In response, a group of Chicagoans from many
faiths and backgrounds have formed "Friends of the Windows" and
launched an "emergency campaign" to save this stained glass
treasure. The project is fortunate to have received technical assistance
from the chief stained glass expert of the Government of France's Ministry
of Culture.
The Friends of the Windows Conservancy,
a 501 C3 tax-exempt fund, gratefully accepts contributions made for
upkeep and preservation of these spectacular collection of stained
glass.
St.
James Chapel is located within The Quigley Center, at the corner of
Rush & Pearson Streets, just block west of Hancock Center.
