In 1915 George William Mundelein was appointed 3rd Archbishop of Chicago,
following Archbishop James Edward Quigley. In May of 1916, then Archbishop
Mundelein announced his plans for a prepartory seminary to be built in Chicago.
On the Feast of the Holy Apostles Phillip and James, Mundelein wrote
in his letter to all Pastors:
"The seminary Chapel is to be dedicated
to St. James the Apostle, the Patron Saint of the late Archbishop. I
wish this to be the gift of the Catholic children of the diocese to their
Archbishop's memory"
See Archbishop Mundelein's Original Letter
In response to the nearly $20,000 gift, donated
by the children of the Archdiocese to this appeal, Cardinal Mundelien contracted
with the John J. Kinsella Company of Chicago to have Robert Giles create
the stained glass within St. James Chapel.
